The NFL did something unusual to open the 2026 season.

Instead of the traditional Thursday night kickoff, the league opened on Wednesday.

And it chose a matchup that needed almost no introduction.

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks welcomed the New England Patriots to Lumen Field on September 9 for a rematch of Super Bowl LX. It was only the third time in NFL history that a Super Bowl rematch opened the following season.

The result was a 13 to 10 Seattle victory.

But the final score does not fully explain what made this game interesting.

This Was About More Than a Rematch

A Super Bowl rematch carries an emotional weight that a typical season opener does not.

For New England, it was an opportunity to erase the memory of its 29 to 13 Super Bowl loss to Seattle.

For Seattle, it was an opportunity to demonstrate that winning the Lombardi Trophy was not the conclusion of its story.

It was the beginning of its defense.

That distinction matters.

Championship teams are judged differently once they have won. Before the championship, the question is whether you can win. After the championship, the question becomes whether you can remain hungry.

Seattle answered that question with a comeback.

New England Started Fast

The Patriots appeared to control the early direction of the game.

New England jumped out to a 10 to 0 lead, with rookie tight end Eli Raridon catching his first career touchdown. For a Patriots team looking to redefine itself, the opening was encouraging. The problem was finishing.

Seattle eventually fought its way back. And the Seahawks did it without their starting quarterback.

Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury during Seattle's opening drive and left the game. Backup Drew Lock stepped in and helped lead the comeback, including a 45 yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

That is the part of this game that deserves more attention.

Championship Culture Is Tested When the Plan Breaks

Every team has a plan.

Championship teams have to know what to do when the plan disappears. Seattle lost its starting quarterback.

It fell behind.

It faced a Patriots team that appeared poised to control the game. And it still found a way to win.

That does not mean Seattle is automatically destined to repeat as Super Bowl champion. It does mean the Seahawks demonstrated one of the characteristics championship teams need most.

Adaptability.

The Patriots Have Work to Do

New England's loss should not be treated as a season defining failure. But it exposed some areas that deserve attention.

Drake Maye showed flashes, but three fourth quarter interceptions ultimately changed the game. The Patriots also had to adjust after running back TreVeyon Henderson was ruled out before the opener because of an ankle injury.

The encouraging part for New England is that the team did not look completely overwhelmed. The Patriots led for much of the game. Their defense created opportunities. And they were within striking distance late.

The problem was closing.

That is a very different problem from being unable to compete.

Why the Wednesday Opener Matters

There was also a business story behind the unusual kickoff.

The NFL's decision to open the season on Wednesday created an event rather than simply another football game.

The league placed a Super Bowl rematch in prime time, in Seattle, on NBC, and gave fans a storyline they already understood.

The defending champions. The team they defeated. The championship still fresh in everyone's memory.

That is smart sports marketing.

The NFL understood that the opening game was not simply about football. It was about creating anticipation. And anticipation is one of the most valuable assets in sports.

The Athlete Branding Lesson

There is a broader lesson here for athletes at every level.

Your biggest moment does not define your brand by itself. What you do after the biggest moment may matter even more.

Seattle entered the season as the champion.

New England entered it as the team looking for redemption. Both teams now have an opportunity to tell a new story.

That is the nature of sports.

Every season gives athletes another chapter.

WEEK TWO CHANGED THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONVERSATION

Week One introduced the contenders. Week Two introduced the chaos.

College football has a way of reminding everyone that rankings are temporary, reputations are fragile and a game can change the national conversation in a matter of minutes.

That lesson arrived loudly on Saturday.

Texas entered its matchup with Ohio State as the No. 4 team in the country. Ohio State entered as No. 1.

By the end of the night, the college football hierarchy had changed.

Texas erased a 20 point fourth quarter deficit and defeated Ohio State 24 to 23, producing one of the most dramatic comebacks of the early season. And that was only part of the story.

Texas Just Changed Its Ceiling

There are wins, and then there are wins that change how a team is perceived.

This was the second kind.

Texas did not simply beat Ohio State. The Longhorns demonstrated that they could absorb a devastating start, make adjustments and execute when the pressure was at its highest. Quarterback Arch Manning became part of that conversation as Texas rallied in the fourth quarter. The Longhorns scored 21 unanswered points after entering the final period down 23 to 3.

That type of resilience matters because championship football is rarely perfect.

Teams will fall behind. Star players will struggle. Game plans will fail. The question is what happens next. Texas answered that question.

Oregon Learned the Other Side of the Equation

I f Texas represented resilience, Oklahoma State represented opportunity.

The Cowboys shocked No. 6 Oregon 39 to 31, snapping a 12 game losing streak and ending a 21 game losing streak against FBS opponents. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards.

That result is significant beyond the upset itself.

College football has become increasingly difficult to predict because the talent ecosystem has changed.

Transfer opportunities, NIL resources, coaching movement and expanded access to development have created more pathways for programs to close the gap.

A team that looks overmatched on paper can be considerably different on Saturday afternoon.

Oregon discovered that firsthand.

Michigan Reentered the Conversation

Michigan also delivered a response after the turbulence of opening week.

The Wolverines defeated previously No. 11 Oklahoma 17 to 10, helping restore some confidence after their narrow Week One victory over Western Michigan.

The result also moved Michigan back into the AP Top 25 at No. 19, while Oklahoma dropped to No. 24.

That is an important lesson about college football.

The story is rarely finished after one Saturday. Programs have opportunities to respond. Players have opportunities to redefine narratives. Coaches have opportunities to correct mistakes.

The Rankings Now Tell a Different Story

Following Week Two, Texas moved to No. 1 in the AP Top 25, receiving 56 of 68 first place votes.

Ohio State dropped to No. 6.

Oregon fell to No. 21.

Michigan returned at No. 19.

Meanwhile, Georgia and Notre Dame remained near the top, and Miami moved into the top five.

The movement illustrates why early season rankings should be viewed as a snapshot rather than a prediction.

The most interesting part of the rankings is not necessarily who moved up or down. It is why .

Teams are now being evaluated on their ability to respond to adversity, not simply their preseason reputation.

The NIL and Athlete Branding Angle

There is another story underneath all of this.

For athletes, these games are career accelerators. A nationally televised performance against a top ranked opponent can change how an athlete is viewed by fans, scouts, brands, media outlets and professional organizations. That makes personal branding increasingly important.

The athlete's football résumé matters. But so does the athlete's ability to communicate, connect with an audience, represent brands professionally and create a story that extends beyond the scoreboard.

Week Two showed us that the college football brand can change overnight.

So can an athlete's.

Week Two did not simply produce winners and losers.

It created new questions.

Can Texas remain at the top?

Can Ohio State recover?

Was Oklahoma State's victory an upset or a sign of a changing competitive landscape?

Can Michigan build momentum?

And which emerging players will turn early season visibility into something bigger? Those questions are what make college football compelling.

The season is no longer about proving who was supposed to be good. It is about discovering who actually is.

BUT WEEK ONE WAS ABOUT MORE THAN WINS

College football is officially back, and if the opening week of the 2026 season told us anything, it is that the path to championship contention is going to require much more than a recognizable name on the front of a jersey.

Week One delivered dominant performances, close calls, emerging stars and a few early warning signs. More importantly, it reminded us that in today's college football environment, perception can change quickly.

Ohio State entered the season with the expectations that come with being one of the nation's premier programs. The Buckeyes responded with a 56 to 3 victory over Ball State. Quarterback Julian Sayin threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, immediately giving Ohio State a strong opening statement.

But dominance was not limited to Columbus.

LSU made perhaps one of the loudest statements of opening weekend, dismantling Clemson 51 to 10. Miami defeated Stanford 45 to 6, Georgia handled Tennessee State 63 to 3, Notre Dame defeated Wisconsin 41 to 13, and Texas opened with a 59 to 7 win over Texas State.

On paper, those scores look like business as usual for college football's traditional powers.

I see something more significant.

The Standard Has Changed

The modern college football program is no longer simply competing for Saturday victories. It is competing for attention, athletes, recruits, sponsors, donors, television audiences, social media engagement and eventually playoff positioning.

That means every performance is also a brand statement.

A dominant opener can create momentum around a program. A close call can create questions before a team has even had time to establish its identity.

Michigan provided one of the clearest examples.

The Wolverines survived Western Michigan 13 to 12 after a last second 47 yard Hail Mary from Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan. The victory preserved the win, but it also generated questions about Michigan's performance and its ability to handle pressure.

That is the new reality.

Winning is essential, but how you win matters too.

Miami Is Worth Watching

Miami's opening performance deserves attention beyond the final score.

The Hurricanes defeated Stanford 45 to 6, with quarterback Darian Mensah accounting for five touchdowns. Wide receiver Malachi Toney also immediately placed himself into the national conversation after a 234 yard, three touchdown performance.

For a program trying to establish itself among the national elite, these are more than statistics.

They are visibility opportunities.

Players who perform at this level are building their athletic résumés, but they are also building personal brands. In the NIL era, performance creates attention, attention creates opportunity, and opportunity can extend well beyond the football field.

Week One Is Not the Finish Line

The danger after opening weekend is overreaction.

A blowout does not guarantee a championship. A close game does not automatically mean a program is in trouble.

The real test begins when opponents have enough film to identify weaknesses.

That is why the transition from Week One to Week Two is so important. The first weekend establishes expectations. The second weekend begins testing them.

And for college football programs, the teams that can adjust fastest may ultimately separate themselves from the teams that simply looked impressive in September.

The 2026 season is young, but the message from opening week is already clear.

Talent gets you attention. Execution earns credibility. Consistency creates contenders.
